Health and Safety
While most study abroad programs will have their own pre-departure orientation that covers site-specific health and safety issues, below are health and safety guidelines that pertain to all students studying abroad.
Health guidelines
- Review NKU’s Health Questions & Answers for the Study Abroad Participant (link to document).
- Read the Center for Disease Control's (CDC) information on the country you will be visiting.
- Discuss the CDC’s travel health recommendations with your family physician at least two months prior to departure.
- Find out if your study abroad program fees will include limited international health insurance coverage while abroad.
- Contact your current health insurance provider to determine its international coverage.
Safety guidelines
- Review the U.S. State Department’s students abroad information under the “Emergencies” and “Smart Travel” sections.
- Read the U.S. State Department’s country specific information for your study abroad destination.
- Register your travel plans with the U.S. State Department in order that they may assist you in the case of an emergency or natural disaster while abroad.
