Packing Tips

While a more detailed packing list will likely be available from your program leader or program provider, here are some basic principles to keep in mind when you are deciding what to bring.

Consider the season

Many parts of the world do not enjoy the same four seasons that we have in our region of the United States. Many countries have only two seasons – wet and dry. Find out what the weather is typically like during the time of year when you will be traveling there.

Pack in layers

In order to better adapt to changing temperatures and to stretch your wardrobe, pack items that can be easily layered.

Think about local customs

Many of the styles of dress that are common here in the United States are considered inappropriate or taboo in other parts of the world. Find out what men or women commonly wear in your host country. When in doubt, skip items of clothing that are very revealing and may bring you unwanted attention abroad.

Know your own strength

You, and you alone, will have to physically carry your suitcase through all points of your study abroad trip. As a reality check, some suggest packing your suitcase and walking around the block with it in order to test your endurance.

Check airline, TSA, & host country regulations

In this day and age, airline and Transportation Security Administration regulations are constantly changing. Make sure to check the weight restrictions and number of bags your airline will let you check. Also, look at the TSA Web site for the most recent restrictions as to what can and cannot be carried on board.

Remember that in addition to TSA regulations, the country to which you are traveling may have different laws as to what items (i.e. over-the-counter medicines) can be legally brought into their borders. Check out country-specific information made available by the U.S. Department of State.

Leave room for souvenirs

Most students look forward to buying souvenirs abroad, but it is important to consider how you will transport them back home. Make sure to leave extra room in your suitcase or look into costs and procedure for shipping your items home by mail.
