Passports and Visas
Passports
All students will need a passport in order to participate in study abroad. For instructions on how to obtain a U.S. passport, click here. Students who are citizens of another country should consult their embassy regarding its passport regulations.
- No matter your nationality, as a general rule, it is recommended that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond the date of return for your study abroad program.
Visas
Depending on your nationality, your study abroad destination, the nature of your study abroad program, and the length of time you will spend abroad, you may need to apply for a visa. To determine whether you will need to apply for a visa, first consult your program provider, which in some cases may be the Office of Education Abroad. If a visa is required, some programs will assist students with the application process, while others will require the student to apply independently.
- In all cases, it is important that students who are U.S. citizens review the Country Specific Information on entry/exit requirements from the U.S. Department of State.
- Students who are not U.S. citizens will need to contact the embassy of the country where they will be studying abroad to confirm visa requirements for students of that nationality.
Quick tips!
- Remember, to sign your passport once you receive it.
- Make photocopies of the picture page and visa page in your passport. Leave one set of copies at home and pack one set in your bags separate from your actual passport, in case it is stolen.
