Academic Exchange Programs

Learn at one of NKU’s 18 exchange universities

Academic exchanges are the most independent study abroad programs offered by NKU.  Students spend either a semester or an academic year at one of our exchange universities.  Most universities only offer classes taught in their respective foreign language.  In Australia, Denmark, Romania, Scotland, and Taiwan some or all classes are taught in English.  These exchange programs offer an immersion into a new culture, a chance to improve upon language skills, and a unique study experience.

  • Application Deadline for Spring 2010 Programs is Friday, September 18, 2009.
  • Application Deadline for Fall 2010 Programs is Monday, February 15, 2010.

  • Scholarships are available to NKU students studying abroad through an academic exchange.

Note: Students applying to participate in an NKU academic exchange must have completed one year of study at NKU prior to the semester or academic year during which they would like to do the exchange.

Australia

Edith Cowan University

Edith Cowan University, located in Perth, Western Australia is a contemporary university with a wide range of course options available to its students.  Enjoy the greenery and beach-lifestyle of Perth or spend time exploring the many boutiques, art galleries, restaurants, or thriving nightlife. 

ECU, the second largest university in Western Australia, is home to more than 3,000 international students from over 90 countries.  With its dedication to becoming a leader in international education and the multitude of courses offered, ECU offers exchange students quality instruction and flexibility in pursuing a variety of academic programs.

Costa Rica

National University

Improve your Spanish language abilities in Costa Rica! Costa Rica, a peaceful, developing country, has a democratic history and long tradition of ecological preservation and conservation. Universidad Nacional (UNA) is located in the city of Heredia. Heredia is located in the Central Valley, approximately 10 kilometers from the capital of San Jose.

The second largest university in Costa Rica, UNA enrolls about 18,000 students. Housing is provided with a Costa Rican host family. A private room, three meals per day, laundry facilities, and transportation to and from the airport is provided.  Spanish language courses are offered at intermediate,and advanced levels. A variety of courses of other academic disciplines are also offered in Spanish. The academic year at UNA is divided into three quarters: First quarter: end of January to end of April; Second quarter: middle of May to middle of August; Third quarter: beginning of September to end of November.

Denmark

Aarhus School of Business

Aarhus, “the world’s smallest big city”, is located in central Denmark, roughly 200 miles from the capital of Copenhagen. Aarhus is a ‘young’ town due to its large student population. The city has much to offer: cozy pedestrian streets, the Marselisborg Castle (where the royal family spends summer vacations), numerous museums, and many cultural events throughout the year. Be sure to experience the beautiful Danish coastline and numerous islands!

The Aarhus School of Business offers many classes in English, and since the Danes are
generally multilingual, language proficiency is not a concern.

Ecuador 

University of San Francisco in Quito

The University of San Francisco in Quito is a private liberal arts university located in the valley of Cumbayá, about a 20-minute bus ride from the city of Quito. Quito is the capital of Ecuador and is situated only 24km (l5mi) south of the equator. But despite being so close to the equatorial line, the altitude allows Quiteflos to enjoy a mild climate all year long. Quito has one of the most well-preserved colonial city centers in all of South America, which boosts a labyrinth of colonial mansions, cathedrals, and packed cobblestone streets.

Approximately 700 international students attend USFQ each year and, while studying there, many also take the time to enjoy Ecuador’s natural wonders, including the Galapagos Islands.

France 

University of Caen Basse-Normandie

The University of Caen is located in heart of the city of Caen in the Normandy region. With a population of just above 200,000 in Greater Caen, the city is two hours by train from Paris and just 15 minutes from the English Channel. Caen offers a cosmopolitan atmosphere with many cultural activities for those looking for an urban experience, yet enough green space to enjoy the natural beauty of Northern France.

NKU students will have the opportunity to learn and improve French language proficiency at the Centre d’Enseignement de Français pour Etrangers (CEFE). The CEFE is a department of the university located on the main campus. Approximately 2,000 students of many nationalities take part in CEFE programs each year. Should you wish to study in the CEFE, you will take a placement exam upon arrival for placement in an appropriate level of French courses.  Housing for the exchange includes either accommodation within the university dorms or with a host family.

Germany

Ludwig Maximilians University

Study in Munich at Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU), one of Germany’s most prestigious universities. Munich, the capital of Bavaria, is a cosmopolitan city that has become an economic and cultural center within Germany. Best known for the annual Oktoberfest celebration, Munich has much more to offer, including world-class museums, theatre, shopping, and entertainment.  Venture outside of the city to experience castles, medieval churches, and small villages. Don’t forget: Munich is a short train ride from other European cities, including Prague and Vienna.

Roughly 44,000 students attend LMU and most classes are held in large lecture halls. NKU students must have completed two upper-level German classes to be eligible for this academic year exchange.

Japan

Gifu University

Gifu University is located in Gifu City, in central Japan, about halfway between Tokyo and Kyoto. Experience the Japanese culture in a safe, spacious, and comfortable region of the country. Located on the Nagara River, Gifu City’s attractions include Gifu Castle, Mount Kinsha National Forest, and cormorant fishing.

Language requirements for study at Gifu University are determined on an individual
basis and classes for foreign students are taught on three levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced.  This exchange is an academic year exchange. A three- or eight-week summer program is also possible.

Nanzan University

Nanzan University is located in Nagoya, Japan. Nagoya is the fourth largest city in Japan, with a population of just over 2 million people and is located on the island of Honshu. NKU students will study at the Center for Japanese Studies (CJS) within Nanzan where they will receive intensive language instruction (from beginner to advanced). Students will also have the opportunity to take courses in Japanese culture and society.

Accommodations include a home stay with a Japanese family or within an off-campus
international residence hall. Approximately 100 students study at the CJS each year.

Korea

Hansung University

Hansung University is located Seoul, Korea. Surrounded by mountains, Seoul, Korea’s capital city, represents the country’s center for business, education, and modem culture. It offers many activities for everyone, including museums and palaces, parks and mountains, and amusement parks and night clubs.

Hansung University is a university geared towards the local community of the Seongbuk-gu area where the scenery of Mt. Naksan overlooks greater Seoul. Hansung has a variety of academics to choose from in humanities, social sciences, arts, engineering, liberal arts, as well as a study for the teaching profession. Intense courses in the Korean language are also available. Students attending Hansung receive the highest standard of education from dedicated teachers while enjoying many aspects of Korean culture.

Mexico

Autonomous University of the State of Morelos

Study in Cuernavaca, the “City of Eternal Springtime”, just 70 kilometers south of Mexico City. This state capital of Morelos is home to the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM), one of the best public universities in Mexico. The city is surrounded by pre-Hispanic ruins and is centrally located for easy travel to other parts of the country.

The semester program at UAEM offers courses in intensive Spanish (beginner to advanced); and Mexican and Latin American literature, history, and art. Social activities are available for foreign students; including Mexican cooking classes, dancing lessons, and sports. Planned excursions to the beach, archeological sites, and colonial cities are also available.

Autonomous University of Zacatecas

The city of Zacatecas is full of enchanting streets and buildings and emanates an unmatched sense of old world culture. The elegance and beauty of the city is emphasized by the wonderful atmosphere and friendly inhabitants. Zacatecas is known for its fine ironwork and for its buildings of pink sandstone.

Zacatecas University is dedicated to finding solutions to regional and national problems and to fighting against inequality and marginalization. Its academic programs are flexible with plans and programs that are largely accredited.

Jesuit University of Guadalajara: ITESO

ITESO is the Jesuit University of Guadalajara. It was founded in 1957 and belongs to the group of more than 200 Jesuit universities in the world. It shares with them a 450-year-old educational tradition, historically placed at the center of global thought and recognized for its formation of leaders in the fields of science and arts.

Through research and its resources, ITESO develops proposals that directly contribute
to the transformation of conditions of poverty, marginalization, and injustice, particularly in the state of Jalisco. In addition to its focus on social justice, the university offers a wide range of academic programs to its students.

Philippines

Cebu State College of Science & Technology

Cebu, one of the provinces of the Philippines, is one of the most developed provinces of the country and a major center of commerce, trade, education and industry.  Along with the white beaches, clear waters, and rugged mountains, tourists are attracted to Cebu for its numerous and exotic festivals throughout the year.  CSCST has a strong focus on technological and agricultural realms of study.  The city of Cebu is an important metropolitan and education center with nine large universities spread throughout the city.

Romania

Babes-Bolyai University

Babes-Bolyai University, the largest university in Romania, is located in Cluj-Napoca, a city of about 350,000 in northwestern Romania.  The city is one of Romania's most important academic, cultural, industrial, and business centers and home to many museums, entertainment venues, and parks.  Forests, castles, and even a ski-resort in the nearby hills surround Cluj-Napoca. 

BBU caters to about 50,000 students, including 500 international students, who can pursue academic programs taught in Romanian, German, Hungarian, or English.  Courses taught in English center on mathematics, computer science, chemistry, political science, administration, and European studies.  The university buildings are spread across Cluj-Napoca and include a student housing area, making it easy for students to explore all that the city has to offer.

Russia

Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia

Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (PFUR) is located in the southwest part of Moscow, the capital and the largest political, economic, and scientific center of the Russian Federation. Moscow has a great variety of cultural activities to offer, from its world-class opera and ballet to its collections of art.

PFUR is one of 31 universities in Moscow, and is ranked among the country’s best. Its student enrollment matches that of NKU, at around 12,000 students. Many extracurricular activities are available, such as student organization, sports and many cultural activities. PFUR has a well-known program for teaching Russian as a second language. Some limited courses taught in English may also be available.

Scotland

Glasgow Caledonian University

Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city, offers world-renowned art galleries, museums, and many cultural events, including music festivals, concerts, ballet, and opera. Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) is located in the heart of the city, where accommodations nightlife, shopping, and restaurants are all within walking distance.

About 14,000 students attend GCU. The university offers modern facilities and a variety of
courses to cater to many academic disciplines.

Spain

University of Leon

The city of Leon dates back nearly 2,000 years and, therefore, offers many historical sites, such as ancient cathedrals and Roman ruins. Located in the northwest part of Spain, Leon is easily accessible by rail to many cities throughout the country. The people of Leon are known to be hospitable and friendly.

The city is a great mix of a medieval town and a growing modern city. The student enrollment closely compares to that of NKU, at around 12,000 students. Although the university is quite young, it provides modern facilities and a progressive campus. Proficiency in Spanish is required for the exchange, but classes are taught at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. A summer program is also available.

Taiwan

National Chengchi University

National Chengchi University is located at the foot of Chi-nan Mountain in the south of Taipei, with the Ching-mei River to the west. With Taipei as its capital, Taiwan is situated about 160km (l00mi) southeast of mainland China. Taiwan is formally known as the Republic of China and continues to have strong political and economic ties with mainland China (formally the People’s Republic of China), though its own democratic political process has flourished in the later half of the 20th century.  The city of Taipei has a well-known cultural, gourmet-eating and tourism scene and is considered by many to be a gateway to the rest of Asia.

Though Mandarin is the most widely spoken language in Taiwan, exchange students have the opportunity to take classes taught in English. Classes to learn Mandarin are also offered through the Chinese Language Center at NCCU.
